Took a trip to Charlotte to visit the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child processing center, where hundreds of volunteers come each holiday season to process the shoebox gifts that are donated to children around the world. Franklin Graham was there to thank everyone and cheer everyone on. I really wanted to get his autograph or have him sign my book, but just couldn't get that close. It's a really nice organization, there were also several people there who themselves had been recipitents of shoeboxes in the past and now are serving God by volunteering themselves. I have a friend that has been helping me organize things at the shop. She has a traumatic and abusive background. Her self esteem has been in the basement. She really enjoys coming to the shop to escape her present situation and she's quite good at making neat displays of the items.
She wrote me a Thank You note and I wanted to share it. I'm not bragging, I really don't say that much to her, I think it's just an attitude of acceptance.

"Dear Jan,
Thank you for letting me work with you. You make me feel like a person of value. I was delighted to discover a useful talent that lay hidden in me. You did that. I am happy to be your friend. Most people don't bother with the pounded down, self-esteemless. That''s what makes you and Jack so special....your kindness :)
Please don't beat yourself up over what your other family has done. Oh well. That's what's going on at the moment. Thanks Jack, for making delicious banana, choc. chip, flaxseed waffles for breakfast. Comfort food. Nice and yummy on a cool, foggy Sunday morning. We are trying to incorporate Flaxseed into a lot more foods.

Have you ever seen or touched a $2,000/retail purse? I hadn't until Friday. A lady came into the shop with a "Barry Kisselstein-Cord" made in Italy, designer purse, desperate to sell it, needing money. She said it was given to her by a wealthy lady who she worked for in CA. I researched it and indeed, yes, it's up there. His signature logo is a bumpy frog. So, I offered her $100.00 for it and will list it on Ebay of course. There are some listed starting at $700. Whoa, that's some high dollar doo doo, but I don't think I'll be that greedy. Christmas is coming! I hope I make at least $75 on it.

Church this morning: Gotta go find something to wear, my worst challenge on Sunday a.m. besides getting up. Mar, along the church lines, we had a good time at the "Praying for Your Adult Children bible study we started going to on Tues. nights. There were about 8 friends there, and I sat and knitted during it and felt perfectly relaxed.

Healthy Smoothie

For the past week or so, I have been making a healthy smoothie in the morning. It rained alot yesterday and even more today. It's really windy, but not storming. Our windchimes are chinking merrily. The tall pine trees are swaying. Tillie is a nervous wreck. I like days like this because I can stay home from the shop (it's really slow in this weather) and get some stuff done at home. Like list stuff on Ebay. Not that there's stuff I can't do at work, because it feels like I have 2 homes to take care of. A lady came into the shop and sold Jack a bag of costume rings for $15. We found 2 pieces of gold (one was a wedding ring). I took them into the pawn shop and got $70. Then today we were coming home from church and I told Jack to stop so we could pick up a McDonalds bag that had gotten thrown away near our house. When I opened the car door, the bag contents fell out and there was a wet $10 bill. If the bag hadn't been wet, I would've thrown it into the trash without looking. It made its annual re-appearance last week. However, for those of us on a budget, those little cups of goodness can add up. Making your own at home will not only save you money, but you can also enjoy them year-round. In addition, you have more control over the ingredients, so you can tweak the recipe to your liking.

You can change the sugar and fat content of this recipe quite easily.

Pumpkin Spice Latte ...makes 1-2 servings
Ingredients:
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin OR 1 teaspoon of Torani Pumpkin Spice Syrup (your choice)
2 tablespoons sugar or sugar substitute - you can halve this amount
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1-2 shots espresso (about 1/4 cup of espresso or 1/2 cup of strong brewed coffee if you don't have an espresso machine.)
Directions:In a saucepan combine milk, pumpkin and sugar and cook on medium heat, stirring, until steaming. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and spice, transfer to a blender and process for 15 seconds until foamy. If you don't have a blender, don't worry about it - just whisk the mixture really well with a wire whisk.
Pour into a large mug or two mugs. Add the espresso on top.
Optional: Top with whipped cream and sprinkle pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, or cinnamon on top.
